The lining of the uterus that grows and sheds during your cycle.
What is the Endometrium?
The endometrium is the inner lining of the uterus. It is one of the most dynamic tissues in the human body, undergoing rapid growth, structural changes, and shedding every single month.
How it changes:
- Follicular Phase: Estrogen makes it grow and thicken (Proproliferation).
- Luteal Phase: Progesterone makes it secret and stable (Secretory).
- Menstruation: If no pregnancy occurs, the top layers of the endometrium break down and are shed as your period.
Clinical Relevance
The thickness of the endometrium is often measured during fertility treatments via ultrasound. A "thin" endometrium can sometimes make it harder for an embryo to implant.
