What is a Blastocyst?
A blastocyst is a cluster of dividing cells made by a fertilized egg. It is the stage of embryo development that occurs just before it implants in the wall of the uterus.
In a natural pregnancy, the journey from fertilization in the fallopian tube to the uterus takes about 5–6 days. By the time the embryo reaches the uterus, it has become a blastocyst.
The Structure of a Blastocyst
A blastocyst is more than just a ball of cells; it has two distinct parts:
- The Inner Cell Mass (ICM): These cells will eventually become the fetus.
