Trimester

One of the three 13-14 week stages that divide the nine months of pregnancy.

What is a Trimester?

Pregnancy is a 40-week journey, and to make it easier to track and understand, medical professionals divide it into three distinct segments called Trimesters. Each trimester lasts approximately 13 to 14 weeks and is characterized by specific milestones in fetal development and shifts in the mother's physical and emotional experience.

The First Trimester (Weeks 1 – 12)

The Foundation Phase

This is the most critical period for development. While you might not 'look' pregnant yet, your body is working overtime.

  • Baby's Development: The embryo transforms from a cluster of cells into a fetus with a beating heart, a nervous system, and tiny buds that will become limbs.
  • Mother's Experience: This is often the most physically challenging phase due to the massive surge in hormones (hCG, estrogen, and progesterone). Common symptoms include extreme fatigue, nausea (morning sickness), breast tenderness, and frequent urination.

The Second Trimester (Weeks 13 – 26)

The 'Golden' Phase

Many women find this to be the most enjoyable part of pregnancy. The 'survival' mode of the first trimester usually fades.

  • Baby's Development: The fetus grows significantly. It can now move, kick, swallow, and even hear sounds from the outside world. By the end of this phase, the baby's features are fully formed.
  • Mother's Experience: Energy levels typically return. The 'pregnancy glow' often appears. You will begin to show a visible bump, and—most excitingly—you will feel the first flutters of movement (quickening) around weeks 18–22.

The Third Trimester (Weeks 27 – 40+)

The Home Stretch

The focus shifts to final growth and preparing for birth.

  • Baby's Development: The baby puts on significant weight (fat) to help regulate temperature after birth. Lungs mature, and the baby moves into a head-down position in preparation for labor.
  • Mother's Experience: As the baby grows larger, physical discomfort often returns. Backaches, heartburn, shortness of breath, and difficulty sleeping are common. You may also experience Braxton Hicks contractions as your body practices for the big day.
