A temporary organ that connects the mother to the fetus, providing oxygen and nutrients.
What is the Placenta?
The placenta is a remarkable, temporary organ that develops in your uterus during pregnancy. It is the only organ in the human body that is grown for a specific purpose and then discarded after that purpose is fulfilled.
Connected to your baby via the umbilical cord, the placenta acts as the 'life support system' for the fetus, serving as its lungs, kidneys, and digestive system all at once.
How the Placenta Works
The placenta performs several high-stakes jobs simultaneously:
- Oxygen and Nutrient Delivery: It filters oxygen, glucose, and nutrients from the mother's bloodstream and passes them to the baby.
- Waste Removal: It carries carbon dioxide and waste products away from the baby and back into the mother's circulation to be filtered out.
- Hormonal Production: The placenta becomes a massive hormone factory, producing the progesterone, estrogen, and hCG needed to sustain the pregnancy and prepare the breasts for breastfeeding.
- Immune Shield: It allows antibodies to pass from the mother to the baby, providing the infant with some immunity for the first few months after birth.
Placental Placement
The placenta can attach anywhere on the wall of the uterus.
- Anterior Placenta: Attached to the front wall (closest to your belly). This is normal but can sometimes muffle the feeling of baby's kicks.
- Posterior Placenta: Attached to the back wall (closest to your spine).
- Placenta Previa: A condition where the placenta attaches very low and covers the cervix. This requires careful medical monitoring as it can cause bleeding and usually necessitates a C-section.
The 'Fourth Stage' of Labor
After the baby is born, the final stage of labor is the delivery of the placenta (often called the afterbirth). The uterus continues to contract for a few minutes to detach the placenta from the wall and push it out.
