The 'liquid gold' produced by breasts in late pregnancy and the first days after birth.
What is Colostrum?
Colostrum is the very first stage of breast milk produced by the mother's body. It is often called "Liquid Gold" because of its deep yellow or golden hue and its incredibly high concentration of life-sustaining nutrients.
Your body actually begins producing colostrum during the second trimester of pregnancy (around week 16–20), though you might only notice a tiny leak in the final weeks before birth.
Why is Colostrum So Important?
While it is produced in very small quantities (only teaspoons at a time), it is perfectly designed for a newborn's tiny, marble-sized stomach. Its primary functions include:
- Immune System Blueprint: It is packed with antibodies (specifically IgA) that coat the baby's intestines and provide immediate protection against bacteria and viruses.
- The First Laxative: Colostrum has a mild laxative effect that helps the baby pass their first stool, called meconium. This helps clear excess bilirubin and prevents newborn jaundice.
- Blood Sugar Regulator: It provides a concentrated source of protein and carbohydrates to stabilize the baby's blood sugar after the transition from the womb.
- Growth Factors: It contains specialized proteins that help the baby's digestive tract mature and develop.
How Long Does It Last?
Your body will produce colostrum for approximately 2 to 5 days after birth. After this 'transitional phase,' your milk will 'come in,' becoming whiter, higher in volume, and eventually maturing into standard breast milk.
Can I Collect Colostrum Before Birth?
Some women choose to 'hand express' and freeze tiny syringes of colostrum starting around 37 weeks of pregnancy (with their doctor's approval). This can be a great insurance policy if the baby has difficulty latching initially or needs extra blood sugar support.
The Bottom Line
Colostrum is nature's ultimate 'starter kit' for a newborn. Even if you only breastfeed for the first few days, providing your baby with colostrum gives their immune system an incredible head start.
