The dark vertical line that often appears on the abdomen during pregnancy.
What is the Linea Nigra?
The Linea Nigra (Latin for 'black line') is a dark, vertical line that appears on the belly during pregnancy. It typically runs from the pubic bone up to the belly button, or sometimes even higher toward the ribs.
The line is usually about a quarter to half an inch wide and is completely harmless.
Why Does it Appear?
The line is caused by the same hormonal surge that causes the 'pregnancy glow' and darkening of the nipples. Increased levels of melanocyte-stimulating hormone (triggered by estrogen) cause more pigment (melanin) to be produced in certain areas of the skin.
Actually, the line was always there! It's called the linea alba (white line), but it's usually the same color as your skin and goes unnoticed until the hormones darken it.
When Does it Show Up?
The Linea Nigra typically becomes visible during the second trimester (around month 5). It may get darker as the pregnancy progresses and you spend more time in the sun.
Will it Go Away?
Yes! For most women, the Linea Nigra gradually fades and disappears within a few months after birth as hormone levels return to normal. If you are breastfeeding, it might take a little longer to fade completely.
The Bottom Line
The Linea Nigra is a beautiful 'stretch mark' of sorts—a visible badge of the incredible work your body is doing to grow a human. There's no need to treat it or cover it up; just embrace it as part of your pregnancy journey!
